So I went to watch this movie today. The director and actors are all pretty new to me but I’ve been a fan of Hercules story so I have to see what this one can offer. Sadly though, I’m quite disappointed.
The movie started with scenes of war when King Amphitryon stormed the neighboring country Argos. He was so badass that he won the battle by defeating the enemy’s king on a 1-on-1 fight. His queen though, didn’t like his badassness that much. She prayed to her Goddess Hera for help, to stop her husband from shedding more blood to the land, and you know what Hera responded? She said, the almighty father of Gods Zeus had had a crush on the queen for a while and he would like to put a son in her belly (creepy enough), and good thing was, the son would be the one to save the world.
20 years later, Hercules had grown into a strong, good-looking man who happened to be happily in love with a princess called Hebe. (A princess who perhaps had financial problem because she gave him a necklace made of stone). Hercules’ dad and brother both loathed him, his mother loathed her husband and her first son, and Hercules seemed too happy to know what was going on. All he knew was the girl who he was so in love with even later in the story, all he could think about was to get the girl back and stop his brother from marrying her. Even though he eventually gathered an army to fight his father, the act was lack of enthusiasm as if the story writer simply put the part in to make Hercules a hero, but failed to convince us why he did so.
I actually blame the screen writing and directing more than the original story itself. The story could have been more convincing if appropriate tension and emphasis can be added. The king was violent, the queen wanted peace for the people, the elder son admired his father and was jealous of the strength of his brother (or his abs), Hercules had a kind and sympathetic heart like his mother but he hadn’t been treated well in the castle since young, when he learnt about his true responsibility later, he sworn to revenge for his mother and lead the people to salvation. See? Good story, but the movie failed it. Firstly, Hercules seemed to have a perfectly happy childhood, a reason less to hate the family. Secondly, I barely feel any love chemistry between Hercules and Hebe, the kissing scene was dull I didn’t even enjoy it. Thirdly, I don’t see why the queen hated her first son. What did the poor kid do to upset his mother? Fourthly, Hercules and Sotiris’s small army was ambushed under the king’s secret order. Sotiris later returned to the kingdom and started a rebellion. The king was so afraid until he had to loot his people for gold to buy more army. This is so lame I couldn’t even…what a convenient reason for Hercules to rebel against his father (well, foster father).
Overall, the movie is quite off to me, I don’t feel any strong emotion in it, people fight just because fighting looks cool in a movie and that’s it. A 2-star movie for me, unfortunately.
